Proposed Canonical Change CANONS PROPOSED REVISION OF CANON VI: Existing language of Canon VI: At each Diocesan Convention one person shall be elected Deputy for a three year term to represent the Diocese in the Provincial Synod. There shall be three Deputies in the delegation, two who are not ordained and one who is ordained. A Deputy shall continue in office until a successor is elected. The provisions of Canon V shall apply to persons who are Deputies to the Provincial Synod. Proposed language of revised Canon VI: (with changes in bold and underlined) The Bishop and Diocesan Council shall appoint Deputies to the Provincial Synod to attend meetings called by the President of the Province. There shall be three Deputies in the delegation, two who are not ordained and one who is ordained. A Deputy shall continue in office until a successor is appointed. The provisions of Canon V shall apply to persons who are Deputies to the Provincial Synod. RATIONALE The intent of this proposed revision is to allow for more flexibility in securing Deputies to represent the Diocese at Provincial Synod meetings by changing the current practice of annually electing and rotating Provincial Deputies. This revision is recommended for several reasons: 1) The Provincial Synod has now changed its bylaws so that they will usually meet only once every three years - in the year of General Convention. This makes the annual rotation of deputies unnecessary and cumbersome. 2) From now on the Provincial Synod will be meeting at the same time as the Provincial Pre-General Convention Hearing and negates the need for sending delegates who are not already going to the General Convention Hearing (or for some other purpose). 3) Although we could simply appoint our General Convention deputies to also serve as Provincial Synod deputies, there are eight General Convention deputies and only three Provincial Synod deputies. Also we do not know which of our General Convention delegates will be going to General Convention until just before the Provincial Hearing. 4) This revision also provides flexibility for the Bishop and Diocesan Council to appoint Provincial Deputies just prior to any Synod meeting called by the President of the Province based on interest and availability.
